A regular dose of nudging from my wife, combined with the Memorial Day weekend created the critical mass; I pulled out the wrenches and started taking things apart. Within an hour I had five handle assemblies (from two baths) and a huge toilet flushing gizmo in a bag, ready to take down to Lowes Home Improvement Store on Peyton Avenue in Chino Hills. When I got there a young guy named Brandon took me up and down Aisle 51 picking out and matching components together until I had what seemed like all the parts I needed in new, ready-to-install condition. I picked up a few other items and $180 dollars later I was on my way to install these new parts. For the most part, everything went well, but there were some glitches and I did have to go back to the store twice. The first time, I needed help in figuring out why two parts didn't fit together right. A knowledgeable salesperson named Al helped me realize that I had the wrong part and he exchanged it for me. The second time I had to go back was (what I thought), a hopeless quest; I had forgotten an original component, one that I could not replace, in a shopping cart at the store. I was sure that this component was history. Sure enough, my new friend Al had it waiting for me there. I couldn't believe it. In a big store like Lowes (over $46 billion in sales last year), I found more than one, friendly, knowledgeable, considerate friends. I must admit, I'm impressed and my project went way better than I thought it ever could. I'm happy to know that Lowes is opening another center in Chino Hills within a year or so. They are an amazing company. I don't feel the same way about Dell right now. Another project I attempted yesterday was to move all of my computer files and peripherals to my new Dell XPS710 computer. I bought this computer in anticipation of processing bigger graphics files for my business. I hope I'm right. After going through a long telephone sales process with Dell a few weeks earlier, I now realized that my new computer did not have a parallel port on it; you know, the one that usually is used for your printer. I called them to ask why. First, I was asked to give them an "Express Service Code". This is a code that is written somewhere on the bottom or back of the computer, on a sticker, in ten point type size. So just imagine me, a half blind, 49 year old, with a little more side baggage than I'd like and lousy knees, crawling under my desk with a flashlight and a magnifying glass to find some obscure combination of numbers and letters. I don't have to tell you that by the time I got back in my chair I was already upset. This was worse than the plumbing work that I was procrastinating on. Then I was told "Yours is an "advanced system" and parallel ports will no longer be needed. They are too slow". Then the rep proceeded to offer me a deal on a new printer. To say I was not interested is an understatement. Since I didn’t want to wait another week to use my new computer, I asked him if I could transfer the parallel port card from my old computer to the new one. This way I could finish switching over my files and begin using the new computer right away. What was his next question? "What is the Express Service Code for your old computer?" Boy, I was not happy to hear that. Well here I go again, climbing under my desk with my flashlight and magnifying glass. To make a long story a little shorter, they are sending me a new parallel port card. When the whole process was over, I received a questionnaire asking how my customer service representative did on the phone. The questions even angered me more. The whole questionnaire seemed to focus on what the representative might have done wrong. He didn't do anything wrong. He was as helpful as he could be. What was wrong was Dell's policy of asking mildly overweight, half blind, 49-year-olds, with bad knees to climb under their desks with flashlights and magnifying glasses before they can get customer service. I wish Lowes sold computers. Update: Besides the thing about having to climb under my desk, Dell has been pretty good to deal with.
