Please Don't Guess Who To Vote For. These Are My Conservative Recommendations.
Please vote your conscience. I care about financial conservatism but I care more about social conservatism. My vote goes first to those that are willing to answer questions and then, amongst them, to the ones that are conservative both fiscally and on social issues.
Before you vote, go to your candidate's web sites. If you don't know their web site, then look them up on Google. We Google our dates, our employee candi"dates", why not our political candi"dates" too?
Whatever you want to know about them is there and if it isn't then don't vote for them. The worst thing you can do is guess in the voter's booth. There is no reason ever again to do that. I'll list as many of their sites as I have time to find and below that, my opinion (if there is one).
Let's choose the best people for these jobs. The people I am choosing are those, first who I think are right on the social and ethical issues facing our state and federal government and then, second who I think will keep our state and country on a clear fiscal path.
For a quick print of this list, click here.
Our Choices:
For U.S. Senate: Carly Fiorina - I've watched Carly Fiorina's business career over the years and she is a pragmatic and smart woman. I definitely support her. She's already been tested under fire and big companies like Hewlett Packard have their own internal political systems. The decisions she made while she was there kept that company competitive although she made some enemies in the process. She's a tough competitor and will be a great advocate for the right kind of change if she is elected.
Boxer is one of the most dogmatic and difficult Senators I've ever watched. I often feel that I am just wasting my time even to try to share my opinions with her office when issues come up. She doesn't listen and feels entitled to her position after so many years. What good has she done for our country or for our state? I can't think of much. I'm ashamed that I have voted for Boxer when I first came to California and before I became politically conscious. I didn't know what I was in for and I regret it.
Carly Fiorina
Barbara Boxer
For Governor: Meg Whitman - In my opinion, Jerry Brown is part of why California is facing budget problems today. Let's give Whitman a chance to improve our state's financial position. Although I support ample pay for state employees, giving state employees collective bargaining power has resulted in disproportionate power for public employee unions and unsustainable benefits for state employees.
Brown's Site
Meg's Site
Lieutenant Governor: Karen England (Write-in Candidate) - I can't vote for either of the listed candidates. I'm not voting for Gavin Newsom. He is an ultra-liberal and Abel Maldonado ignored requests to act in the place of our Governor when asked to defend state law in the defense of the voter-supported Prop 8 this year. Karen is the Executive Director of the Capitol Resource Institute, a non-profit organization that provides education and advocacy for family values.
Karen England (She is a write-in candidate and won't appear on the ballot)
Gavin Newsom
Abel Maldonado
Pamela Brown
Secretary of State; Damon Dunn - I think that the Secretary of State could use a new approach. There are things I like about Bowen, but I see value in a fresh perspective by a younger thinking candidate.:
Dunn's site...
Debra Bowen
State Controller: Tony Strickland - This is our state's Chief Financial Officer. I don't thnk that Chiang is doing that great of a job...
His web site is:
Tony Strickland
John Chiang
State Treasurer: Mimi Walters - After 37 years I'd say it's time to replace Lockyer.
Mimi Walters...
Bill Lockyer
Attorney General: Steve Cooley - Cooley has much more experience and reflects conservative values. Harris comes off as a liberal activist to me. Their web sites are:
Cooley Site...
Kamala Harris...
Insurance Commissioner: Mike Villines - Mike's values seem very right. I get the impression from Jones' site that he backed the national health care entitlement bill that was passed this year. Although
Villines' Site...
Dave Jones...
Member, State Board of Equalization, District 2: George Runner - Looks very qualified.
Runner's Site...
Chris Parker
United States Representative: Gary Miller - I like Gary Miller. Although Williamson is listed as a Democrat, if you look at his web site you'd think he was a Tea Party member.
Gary's Site...
Michael Williamson
Member of State Assembly: Curt Hagman - He's been awesome for Chino Hills and for the 60th District; a great guy and very smart. Who is Gregg Fritchle?
Curt's Site...
Gregg Fritchle
Judge of the Superior Court - Office 11: James Hosking - I can't find a darn thing on Lemkau except for calls to remove him. I think he needs to retire.
Hosking's Site...
Posterous' Site...
Judges: The ballot just asks us to vote yes or no on 9 judges. Since judges seem to be more active in creating laws than judging them, these could be very important to get right. On the state Courts, you vote “yes” or “no.” If a majority says “no,” they are out of the office and the Governor must select a new judge. Here are my opinions after looking online:
Tani G. Cantil-Sakauye - Yes
Ming W. Chin - Yes
Carlos R. Moreno - No
Judith D. McConnell - No
Manuel A. Ramirez - Yes
Carol D. Codrington - Yes
David G. Sills - Yes
William W. Bedsworth - No
Eileen C. Moore - No
State Superintendent of Public Instruction: Tom Torlakson - This one is a bit difficult but I got the impression after looking at both of their sites that Torlakson is more on top of the issues.
Torlakson's Site...
Larry Aceves
Chino Valley Unified School District - I prefer not to make all my local choices public because I am friends with more of them than there are positions. The good thing is that we are blessed to have several good candidates and I'm going to make my final choices in the voting booth. One that I'm completely sure about is Silvia Orozco. She's done a good job for the District and I think she will continue to do so.
Sylvia Orozco
Lisa Keltner - Involved in www.HelpOurSchools.net but I couldn't find her candidate web site. She can be reached at [email protected].
Brandon Blanchard -
Paul Vargas - Couldn't find web site
John Pruitt - Couldn't find web site
Eve McDaniel - Couldn't find web site
Silver Aguilar
Charles Dickie - Couldn't find web site
Irene Hernandez-Blair
City of Chino Hills Member of the City Council - I have to wait until I get into the voting booth to declare this. It's just too personal to me. We have several very good incumbents and I am happy to say, a few very good first-time candidates.
Peter Rogers
Elizabeth Calles - No web site
Bill Kruger - No web site
Ed Graham - No web site
Don Gebhard
Roman Nava
Al Matta - No web site
Lou Alfonso
Inland Empire Utilities Agency - Same as above. I know both of these guys and I like them both so I'll have to decide this in the voting booth...
Steve Elie
Miles G. Petroff - Couldn't find web site
Prop 19: No - I've seen enough lives ruined by drugs. This is a no brainer.
Prop 20: Yes - Stop gerimandering
Prop 21: No - I love our parks but the state has to learn to manage the money they have responsibly and stop creating new taxes every time they need more. Driving is already overtaxed. Most of our everyday gasoline costs go to the government already. To me, this is a perfect example of the state using an issue we care about as a shill to tax us more instead of managing their budget.
Prop 22: Yes - Local government is one of the things I think that works properly (with the exception of Bell, CA). Let's prevent the state from hijacking our local budgets because of the state's mistakes and special interests.
Prop 23:Yes - I like it. Surely we want to prevent pollution but state mandates on business are just too onerous. This makes supporting our small businesses a priority for the state.
Prop 24: No - This is just another tax increase.
Prop 25: NO - Legislators just want to make it easier to raise taxes. Please vote no on this.
Prop 26: YES - Requires a 2/3rds vote to raise certain taxes. Please vote yes on this.
Prop 27: No - When will our elected officials stop doing things for themselves and start really representing the public?
There are so many inititives and candidates this election season. I hardly had time to review them all. But by looking at their web sites, reading the Voter Information Guide and Sample Ballot, and considering the opinions of others that I respect, I've been able to come to what I feel are good decisions on candidates and issues.
There is no reason today to make an uninformed decision on an issue or a candidate. Please vote, but more important, take a little time beforehand to decide on who and what you vote for. Don't decide on the future of our state and our country with a pair of dice.

CVUSD Seems Likely to Relocate Most Difficult Students to Los Serranos Location
School Board to vote on recommendations Thursday
The Chino Valley Unified School District (CVUSD) seems likely to vote this Thursday, June 18th, 2009, to move their Alternative Program schools from Ramona Avenue in Chino to Chino Hills at the old Los Serranos Elementary School location on Pipeline and Via Verde Avenues according to documents on the CVUSD web site and a presentation given at the Community Forum held last night. A document listing the pros and cons is on the CVUSD web site. The School Board Agenda for June 18 states
Some Chino Hills residents are concerned because this means that approximately 400 of the most troubled students in the District will be attending school in this residential area.
The two schools involved are the Chino Valley Learning Academy School located at 13453 Ramona Avenue and Buena Vista High School located at 13509 Ramona Avenue, both in Chino. The schools reported 32 and 360 students respectively in the 2007-2008 school year.
We received a call from Chino Hills resident, Teri Weiler, who was concerned that relocating the schools to a residential neighborhood could put children and homes at risk. She stated "Once they consolidate those schools in this residential neighborhood, they will be here for good. So now is the time for us to speak up about this." She pointed out that the existing location is a mixed commercial use area whereas the Los Serranos neighborhood is exclusively residential. She is concerned that many of these students may be involved with gangs or drug use. Mrs. Weiler contacted the City of Chino Hills and was told that the city has no jurisdiction over School Board actions.
"Why are they doing this so quickly? It looks suspicious when they do that. We need more information." said Mrs. Weiler.
There could be something to her concern. According to the School Accountability Report Cards that the school district is required to publish each year, the Chino Valley Learning Academy (CVLA) is...
"a Community Day School serving at-risk, expelled, probation-referred, SARB/SART, or DPSS referred students in grades 7th thru 12th. These students have been expelled or referred to CDS for many reasons, possession of a weapon or illegal substance are two examples of referrals. Students are referred to CVLA in the following order: 1) The student is expelled from his/her home school. 2) The Student is probation-referred. 3) The student is referred by a district-level referral process. The first priority for assignment to CVLA is given to expelled students."
Editors Notes on Acronyms: SART stands for School Attendance Review Team | SARB stands for School Attendance Review Board, the board dealing with truancy. | DPSS stands for Department of Public and Social Services | CDS stands for Community Day School.
The same report for Buena Vista High School states that the school is...
"the only credit recovery program for the Chino Valley Unified School District. Students’ who have reached the age of sixteen, may opt to voluntarily transfer here when they have fallen behind in their academic credits for graduation."
The document discussing recommendations for the School Board lists over fifteen "Pros" for relocating the schools to Chino Hills and only one "Con" as shown below...
Consolidation of Alternative Education Programs to Former Los Serranos Site
"Pros"
- Campus already set up well for this type of functionality
- Would be able to expand student capacity at Buena Vista (BV) and Chino Valley Learning Academy (CVLA)
- Current capacity not sufficient to house all students who qualify and need to attend
- Teacher credentialing - Independent Studies (IS)
- We will not be able to continue IS at school sites over time
- No Child Left Behind compliance
- Home-Based Independent Studies
- Students currently enrolled have no Physical Education facility which is required
- Opportunity Program
- Students need to be in a separate location
- Relocation of Junior High School campus would be more advantageous to students
- Chino Valley Learning Academy
- Students need to be in a separate location
- Relocation of campus would allow for stronger program
- Having a single site would improve supervision and oversight of all programs greater efficiency and enhanced services
The only "Con" listed was:
Mrs. Weiler is asking parents and residents in the Los Serranos area to contact her and to let others in the area know what the school district is planning. She is organizing a neighborhood educational drive to make sure that residents in the area understand what is happening and she feels that much too little notice has been given about the plans.
She is also organizing a petition and planning to ask the school board to delay any decision until more people understand the issues involved. If you are interested in contacting Mrs. Weiler, please <a href="http://www.chinohills.com/contact/">contact us</a> and we will forward your information to her.
We have contacted the School District and are awaiting their comments which we will post here.

"While working as a Manager at Lowes in Irvine, I got throat cancer. Thank God I overcame it, but that gets you thinking about your lifestyle." Said Jim. "I was through working in corporate America so I started a catering business in Orange County and it thrived... I was overweight myself and I had decided that I was not only going to change my personal lifestyle, but I was going to create a business that served up good quality, healthy foods for others. The idea worked and when we sold that business a few years ago, we had almost 60 regular catering customers.
Our customers loved our food. As a matter of fact, one of those customers, Panattoni Development Company, asked us if we'd be interested in opening a restaurant in their new Rancho Del Chino Shopping Center in Chino. Since we've lived in the Chino and Chino Hills area for so long, we accepted. So my wife and I designed the concept and built the restaurant." We opened on March 5th this year."

Since we started ChinoHills.com a number of people from many professions and backgrounds have requested Writer's Access. We would like to thank those of you that have written articles. There are usually two reasons that we do this. 1.) We enjoy it and like contributing to the community, or 2.) We use it as a tool to build our business. I'd like to talk to the number twos for a minute.
Did you know that done properly, writing articles is a great way to build a business reputation? It is free. It doesn't take too much time. And it gets results. Here's why...
If you are doing any good at all for people in your business, then it is likely that there are people out there that want and need information about your expertise... And experts write articles; not articles just to sell products, but articles that are of general interest to the public in the areas where you have the expertise.
When you begin publishing articles on a regular basis, people eventually begin to see you as the "expert", as the "consultant", as the person they should go to when they need help in the area that you provide a product or service. They will begin to knock at your door rather than you having to knock at theirs. This is a proven method of gaining respect and building your business. Take advantage of it. Here are a few tips...
1.) Write on a regular basis. A good frequency is once weekly or once monthly. People will come to expect your articles and they'll come back to read them.
2.) Use an editor. The best writers in the world use editors to bounce ideas off of and for proofreading. Feel free to create drafts and then ask for us to take a look. We will send you suggestions and help you to see your writing from another's point of view.
3.) Write amd save your articles into Notepad or MS Word while you're working on them so you don't lose your work if your computer shuts down or something. It's also a handy way to check your spelling.
4.) Upload a picture with your article to make it more interesting.
5.) Keep your articles between 150 and 400 words long. That's about the right amount for the average reader's attention span. People are busy so sometimes the best thing you can spend your time on is cutting the length of your article.
6.) If you are writing for the Internet, it is ok to keep things personal and informal, but do your best to correct misspells and grammar.
7.) Don't forget to write your byline. We allow a brief byline with contact information for all of our writers.
8,) Don't make your article a blatant advertisement. Everyone has information that others need; so do you. Be creative and think of what you know that others would be interested in reading about.
9.) If you are having a hard time coming up with writing ideas, "Throw up your mind". Play a game with yourself. Get a pen and paper and check your watch. Make a rule that you must list ideas for just one minute. That's all. You must write something constantly for one minute even if it is writing the same idea over and over in different ways. The only rule is that you have to write. At the end of one minute, take another minute or two and add anything that still comes to mind that you didn't get to write down and reorganize the list. You'll be surprised at how this gets new ideas to flow.
10.) Carry a notebook or index card and pen with you everywhere you go and when you get an idea about something to write on, write it down instantly. Otherwise you'll forget.
Good luck and I hope these ideas help you to take advantage of the tools at ChinoHills.com. Next time, I'll write to you recreational writers (the number ones).
